Three boutique ateliers: bespoke wallpaper company Calico, design studio Ladies & Gentlemen, and Australian ceramics company MUD banded together to create a dreamy exhibition. Featuring Calico Wallpaper’s Muse wallpaper, made in collaboration with artist and designer Faye Toogood, lighting from Ladies & Gentlemen, and earth-hued tableware from MUD, the serene oasis was a moment of calm in the heart of design week.

Forget everything you believed about wallpaper (including mental images of your great aunt’s outdated decor). A new generation of designers is creating fresh, modern designs with endless possibilities.

“There is undoubtedly an excitement surrounding pattern at the moment,” says Nick Cope, who cofounded Calico Wallpaper with his wife, Rachel. “Wallpaper has had certain connotations over the years. However, we are always focused on our mission to elevate wallpaper to high art.”…

Milan 2019 – Calico Wallpaper teamed up with Ladies & Gentlemen Studio and MUD Australia to present STILL LIFE, a peaceful installation in an exquisite Milanese residential courtyard exploring the possibilities that lie between stillness and life.

Calico Wallpaper’s collaboration with Faye Toogood

This is Calico’s second collaboration with Faye Toogood, so clearly it knows it’s onto something great. Muse, the painterly collection of wallpaper, honors iconic women like Marie Curie and Coco Chanel with a combination of sweeping brushstrokes and expressive forms, plus Calico’s digital technologies. Pick a wallpaper (there are different background colors to create a series of six colorways) and the results are essentially custom murals. The collection will be available for purchase soon through Calico Wallpaper’s site.

For its second Milan Design Week showcase, technology behemoth Google created an experimental three-room installation that intertwined design with human biology. Visitors were invited to wear a google wristband and then led through the rooms. At the end, they find out in which interior setting they most at ease. Pictured, the ‘Vital’ room, read more here.

Faye Toogood x Calico Wallpaper

It would be remiss of Design daily not to point out that Australian designers will be arriving in Milan en masse. Local Design alone is brining the work of 44 Australian designers! In addition to this ENORMOUS showcase, ceramics studio Mud Australia will be showing with New York design duo Ladies & Gentlemen at an installation called Still Life in collaboration with New York’s Calico Wallpaper.

Already known for their dazzling collections that effortlessly elevate wallpaper to high art, Nick and Rachel Cope, the husband-and-wife duo behind Calico Wallpaper, have reached even greater heights at this year’s Milan Design Week. They find a confidante in British design doyenne Faye Toogood by translating her painterly prints of female figures into a breathtaking series neck-and-neck with the Brooklyn-based studio’s career-defining works but with half a decade’s worth of refinement, exploration, and joie de vivre packed into it.

Nick and Rachel Cope, the husband-wife duo behind Calico Wallpaper, translated an original hand-painted artwork by Faye Toogood into a larger-scale love letter to the endless diversity and variety of the female form. Toogood’s sweeping brushstrokes create a painterly tableau of feminine expressions and poses that evoke such iconic muses as Coco Chanel and Marie Curie.

Viewers can immerse themselves in Toogood’s stunning designs, the colors of which were created with legendary women like Marie Curie and Coco Chanel in mind.

The collaborative work of Calico Wallpaper and Faye Toogood “stretches a few years back,” Calico Wallpaper cofounder Nick Cope tells AD PRO. In 2017, the design house and renowned English designer came together to create a wall-scape inspired by the British Isles landscapes of Toogood’s childhood. While the rest is design history, Nick and Rachel Cope, his partner in work and in life, kept their eyes on Toogood’s continuously evolving designs…

The wallpaper’s title, Muse, took things to the next level. Fittingly, every colorway is named after a women whom Toogood and the Copes all admire. Summing up his own thoughts on the project, Nick notes what an honor it was to work with Toogood, considering the fact that “she’s somewhat of a muse to us as a designer.”

Calico Wallpaper, Ladies & Gentlemen Studio and MUD Australia team up to provide visitors with a rotating series of sensory experiences that invite guests to share a moment of introspection—the perfect mindset to take in MUD’s new collection of minimalist tableware and lighting. “It’s such an easy room to make such a big impact,” says Leifer. Coombs created a curved countertop to echo the drip detail on the Calico wallpaper, and Leifer commissioned custom gilding by Contraposto for the ceiling and crown molding. Sconces by Waterworks, a faucet by Graff, and a sink basin by Vitraform complete the jewel box conceit.

The Calico process combines artisanal methods with decorative arts, such as traditional marbling and dip-dying techniques, with innovative digital technologies. Calico Wallpaper collaborates with important designers and architects. In addition to residential projects, Calico Wallpaper designs have been exhibited internationally at the London Design Festival (2015 and 2017), at the Milan Furniture Fair (2015 and 2017), and have won a place in the permanent collection at Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.

…Another collaboration, this time between Calico Wallpaper and designer Philippe Malouin who presented The Color and the Shape. Inspired by Henri Matisse’s cutouts, the interactive installation included oversized shapes that take collage to a large scale.

Calico and Philippe Malouin combined creative forces to great effect with a collage-based wallpaper that was comprised of layering various materials to shape a room into a Matisse-inspired exercise in abstraction.

Thirty four exhibitions encapsulate Design Miami, composing “eleven Curio presentations representing venues from twelve countries,” according to organizers. Design trends include the use of industrial materials and processes, 3-D printing and robotics.

Founded in Brooklyn, N.Y., the artisanal Calico Wallpaper company exhibition titled “The Color and The Shape” focuses on the firm’s bespoke wallpaper envisioned by London designer Philippe Malouin in collaboration with Nick and Rachel Cope.

“The idea originated out of experiments in creating shapes by tearing paper by hand,” explains Rachel Cope, co-founder and creative director at Calico Wallpaper. “We then began to overlay the resulting organic forms to create a large-scale collage.” Materials range from from Tyvek and paper to mesh. The full collection will be available after the show.

What it is: The most non-traditional wallpaper you’ve ever seen, in fact, it’s more like a paper and mesh collage in hues of blue, calling to mind waves from the perspective of a dolphin.

File next to: The bathroom of your dreams with a huge bathtub, candles and walls like this.

The designers: Brooklyn-based duo Rachel and Nick Cope, who are the force behind Calico wallpaper, are inspired by unknown desert landscapes, the booth structure and mesmerizing patterns reminiscent of sand moved by wind and weather.

The takeaway: This installation reimagines how wallpaper can transform a wall into “abstraction, texture and a modular game of layering,” according to the designers. “Taking inspiration from Henri Matisse and his technique of ‘carving into color,’ a library with a set number of shapes in specific colors and sizes will be the basis for the collage wall assemblies.”

From December 5-9, Design Miami/ is presenting a diverse roster of presentations from 33 exhibitors. On view from the world’s top galleries are 20th and 21st century objects, furniture, lighting, an collectibles…

Calico Wallpaper x Philippe Malouin Just a month ago, in Calico’s Red Hook, Brooklyn studio, I watched as industrial designer Philippe Malouin and wallpaper designer Rachel Cope taped large swaths of material on the wall: Tyvek, mesh, paper of varying colors. Now the final results are on show in a Curio at Design Miami, an idea perhaps for hypercustom, collaged wall assemblages to come.

Walls of change

Many a 2-year-old with a box of crayons has treated wallpaper as an interactive medium, but this wallpaper – The Color & the Shape, designed by Philippe Malouin, who is Canadian and British, and manufactured by Rachel and Nick Cope’s Calico Wallpaper in Brooklyn – really is. Also part of the Curio program, it was inspired by Henri Matisse’s vibrant and influential cutouts from the late 1940s and early ’50s. The medium is the method: colorful, textured, oversized hand-cut forms that can be rearranged and layered, so you can devise a different collage for a special dinner party or houseguest, or just because seasons change and life is ephemeral. Mr. Malouin’s other furniture designs include revolving chairs, high-fashion stools and splashy chandeliers.

At the Design Curio section of the fair, Calico Wallpaper and Philippe Malouin have collaborated to create an interactive surface collage titled ‘The Color and the Shape’ taking inspiration from Henri Matisse cut-outs.
